Metropolitan Psychotherapy and Family Counseling Practice
gay, lesbian, transgender concerns
We at MPFC recognize that it is an important time for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons.  Spain and Switzerland recently legalized same-sex marriage and Massachusetts refused to pass a state regulation that would make it illegal for same-sex persons to marry.  Issues regarding adopting and having children are also being discussed around the world.

It can be stressful to have people discuss what rights you can and cannot have.  It can be both freeing and confusing to suddenly have new options available as possibilities; options you may never have considered before.

Sexual and gender identity is a key part of who we are, and being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender often brings with it special issues and concerns.  At MPFC, we help you to strengthen all aspects of your true sense of yourself.  We help you to sort out and heal from culturally induced oppression, which is based on fear of the richness of diverse gender identities and orientations.  Traumatic events such as harassment, ridiculing, physical and psychological abuse, or subtle criticism lead to low self-esteem, self compromise and low self expectations in many areas of life.  It can then lead to self-destructive behaviors.  Coming out, communicating with family and friends, and nurturing healthy intimacy are easier said than done.

At Metropolitan Psychotherapy and Family Counseling Practice we understand the complex issues associated with sexual and gender identity.  We have years of experience working with clients in the LGBT community and consider this an important area of specialty.

For some people, of course, sexual orientation or gender identity is not the biggest issue in their lives.  Nonetheless, it's important to seek help in an environment where you feel safe and comfortable.  At Metropolitan Psychotherapy and Family Counseling Practice you can rest assured that we will help you explore the issues that are important to you in an environment that is compassionate, understanding, and non-judgmental.  We offer the experience and understanding to help you explore and celebrate your unique identity.
